Image recognition for patterns and materials used in interior wall coverings?

Posted by wa232@cam.ac.uk at Wednesday 11:35

Hello. I have just completed my PhD in Architecture (supervised by Dr James Campbell) on the topic of an archive of decorative wallpapers held at the Victoria & Albert Museum, dating from 1824 to 1938. There are over 27,000 small samples of wallpapers in the archive, along with details of customers, houses and dates they were used in the UK, Europe, USA, India and many other parts of the world.

I am now exploring further research funding to work with the V&A to digitise the archive and to create an online searchable resource for building historians who find samples of wallpapers in old houses or other buildings anywhere in the world, to help them identify dates, patterns, materials and manufacturers.

The technical side of image recognition is way beyond my knowledge and I wonder if anyone involved in the Images project might be able tell me what technology already exists or is in development, or offer suggestions about people with whom I could chat about my ideas for further research?

I hope to hear from you - thank you!
